State Commerce Secretary Jack Fischer’s Limo

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

What kind of culture allows this kind of stuff to happen?

Madison - State Commerce Secretary Jack Fischer had three meetings in the Twin Cities on Jan. 9, but no easy way to get from one to the other.

He could have rented a car. Or taken a cab. Instead, he got himself a limousine and driver, charging taxpayers $561.

The charge included a mandatory $90 tip for the driver, state records show.

McCain Pledges Not to Increase Taxes

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Excellent.

Even a young child posed a question to the Republican presidential candidate: “Will you raise our taxes?”

McCain answered simply: “No.”

The rising concern among economic conservatives about McCain’s commitment not to raise taxes followed complaints from the financial watchdog group Club for Growth, which questioned a recent statement by McCain that nothing — presumably including a payroll tax hike — is “off the table” as a solution for fixing the solvency of Social Security.

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds did his best to put down the speculation

“There is no imaginable circumstance where [McCain] would raise taxes,” Bounds told FOX News on Tuesday.

House Apologizes For Slavery and Jim Crow

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

The House on Tuesday issued an unprecedented apology to black Americans for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow segregation laws.

“Today represents a milestone in our nation’s efforts to remedy the ills of our past,” said Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The resolution, passed by voice vote, was the work of Tennessee Democrat Steve Cohen, the only white lawmaker to represent a majority black district.

The Elie Tahari Janine Driver

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Manolo says, one of the Manolo’s current favorite shoes is this fabulously cute, driving flat from Elie Tahari, known as the Janine Driver.

Without fail, everytime the Manolo sees it, it puts the smile on the face of Manolo, and if that is not the recommendation of merit, the Manolo does not know what is.

Socialist Party Meets in Kern Park

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Can anyone articulate for me how this platform is substantially different than the Democrats’ platform?

The antidote to both, Moore maintains, is to put the Socialist Party in power, so it can go about ending the Iraq war, implementing national health care and guaranteeing work — and at least $35,000 a year — for everyone.

Chicago To Continue to Ignore the Constitution

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Good.  Looks like another opportunity for some case law.

Chicago Police will continue to enforce the city’s handgun ban and firearm registration laws while lawyers fight the pro-gun lobby in federal court.

The National Rifle Association and the Illinois State Rifle Association filed federal lawsuits to shoot down Chicago’s gun laws after the U.S. Supreme Court voided the District of Columbia’s handgun ban last month.

City Corporation Counsel Mara Georges told a City Council committee Thursday that she’s prepared to fight those lawsuits all the way to the Supreme Court.

“Chicago’s gun ordinance was not invalidated by the .

Democrats’ Failed Energy Policies

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

While accurate, I don’t think that this meme is entirely fair.  It’s true that gas prices have gone up dramatically under the Democrat-run Congress, but that is primarily driven by the cost of crude.  The cost of crude is being driven up for a lot of reasons, only some of which are the result of American policy.  So it’s not fair to blame the Democrats for the increase in the price of gas.

That being said, it IS fair to blame the Democrats for doing nothing to help counterbalance the other factors that are driving up the cost of crude.  They have not done anything to increase supply.  They have not done anything to decrease demand.  They have done nothing but sit on their rumps and bitch.  Their inaction is their folly.

Putin’s Words

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

That, my friends, is power.

Speaking at an industry conference this week, Putin, Russia’s former president and now prime minister, spoke five sentences critical of one of his country’s big steel companies, Mechel, and its billionaire chief executive, Igor Zyuzin.

In a sign of Putin’s enduring power in Russia and around the world, that criticism came with a price: about $1.2 billion per sentence in lost shareholder value.

Such is the power of Putin’s words - even after “stepping down” to prime minister in May - that shares in Mechel, a coal mining and steel company, plunged almost 38 percent on the New York Stock Exchange after Putin complained that the company was charging more to its domestic customers than to its foreign ones.
